Heary 'Keeping Jeff was one of my main targets'

Jeff Henderson became the latest player to sign up for the new season when he signed a new contract with the club for 2015.

It takes the total number of players signed up to 19 and manager Owen Heary said he is pleased with the progress being made.

Heary said on signing Henderson: “He is definitely a good signing for us. Jeff was one of my number one targets to get signed and I am glad we have now filled that position. He is a very good footballer with good ability. He's a very positive player who really wants to be a winner. There were other clubs looking at him but I think he made a good choice in deciding to stay here.

“We have Jeff and Gavin Peers so we will have strength in defence. We also have Gary Boylan and have five or six good options who can start at the back which gives us competition there. I would also like to add one more defender to the squad.”

He said he is happy with the progress made so far in assembling his squad and will be looking to strengthen further in January: “We will have a lot of games next year with the different cup competitions so it’s important to have a squad that can cope with that. I’m pretty happy with what we have done so far but I will be looking to see what else is available for us in the new year.”

He said he has been encouraged by the response he has received from fans so far since taking over: “It’s good to hear that season ticket sales are going well. I think we will give fans what they are looking for which is a young, hungry team. Some players could’ve went elsewhere for more money but they want to be at the club and they want the club to do well.

“It’s important that we have everyone pulling in one direction. We will need the fans to get behind the players, it will be a less experienced team but we can make up for that with endeavour. When the fans get behind the players it can lift them that extra 10%. Everyone at the squad is looking forward to getting back for pre-season and hopefully we can achieve something next year.”
