Rovers are Back in Stripes

Sligo Rovers new home jersey goes on sale from tomorrow with a launch event at our club store.

The launch will take place at 1pm at the new club store which is located in Johnston Court shopping Centre. It stocks a whole range of merchandise as well as the new home and away jerseys.

Several members of the Rovers first team squad will be in attendance including Alan Keane, Ruairi Keating, Ryan Coulter and David Cawley.

The jersey sees a return to the Bit o’Red wearing a red and white striped home jersey. The jerseys are made by our official kit suppliers Umbro Ireland who we are in the third year of working with.

Here we take a look back at some previous striped jerseys over the years.

The Rovers team who won the league in 1976/77 wore this striped jersey with red collar.

This was the Umbro-made jersey worn by the team in 1981 when they reached the final of the FAI Cup. This team included the league’s all-time leading goalscorer Brendan Bradley.

When reaching the final again in 1983 the Bit o’Red had a red jersey with white pin stripe. On this occasion Rovers lifted the FAI Cup for the first time.

Into the early 90s and Rovers were back in a stripes again with a white pin stripe.

In 1993 when Willie McStay came to the club Rovers again sported a jersey with stripes in the below design.

A couple of years later in the 1994-95 season with Lawrie Sanchez as manager this was the striped jersey worn. It appeared as Rovers knocked Floriana out of Europe and took on Belgian giants Club Brugge.

When Rovers won promotion to the Premier Division in 2005 the club were again wearing red and white stripes. Raff Cretaro was in the team back then and remains with the club now.

The most recent time Rovers had stripes was in 2008 and 2009 when Seamus Coleman, now one of the world’s best defenders, was wearing the Bit o’Red.

And this is the brand new striped jersey which you can get your hands on from tomorrow.

All fans are invited to attend tomorrow’s event. If you are unable to make it to the shop the new jersey is also on sale from our online store here: http://www.sligorovers.com/shop/category/jersey
