Rovers complete Stephen Folan signing

Sligo Rovers have today made Stephen Folan our latest new signing for the 2015 season.

The defender joins the Bit o’Red from Limerick. He was unveiled at a press conference in the Clarion Hotel.

The Galwegian signed for Newcatle United in 2008 as 16 year-old and played right up to reserve team level. While there he played alongside another current Rovers defender Jeff Henderson.

He left in 2012 and signed for Limerick. He played 66 times for them during his two years scoring three goals and was also made captain last season.

Folan is a former Ireland under-17 and under-18 international where is also played with another new Bit o’Red signing Eoin Wearen.

He takes the number of players signed to Owen Heary’s squad to 20.

On signing Folan said: “I am delighted to have signed now. It has been going on for a while and it has been a frustrating time. I wanted to sign quicker but it wasn’t to be. I am very thankful and grateful to Owen, Gavin and Paul for getting it done and getting it across the line.

“As a defender it will be great to play for Owen Heary. He was a big attraction in me coming to the club. Working under him will improve my all round game. He is the type of manager who will get the most out of me. Sligo Rovers is definitely the right club for me to be at right now.

“I have played with Jeff Henderson and Eoin Wearen before so it is nice to be coming somewhere that you know a couple of the lads. They are very good players but it wasn’t the main reason I signed for the club. I got the right feel when I came to Sligo and met Owen and Gavin. I left thinking ‘I want to come and play here’.

“The stadium and the facilities the club has are among the best in the country. The club has won many trophies over the last few years and I think that under Owen we can win even more.

“I have come here because I want to win the league. I think that with the players we have retained and the players that have been added we are more than capable of right up there fighting for the league in October and hopefully getting to a Cup final as well. The club has high expectations and so do I. There is a couple of other lads from Galway here that have won the league before and I want to do that as well and I think we should have a good chance of that this year.”

Owen Heary also says he is pleased to have secured the services of Folan: “This is a very good signing. He is a very good player and a good defender. He can play on the ball but is also capable of defending when he has to. He is the type of player we want at the club, he is young and hungry to win things. He is also from Galway so knows what the club is all about which is a plus.

“We have been looking at Stephen for a while and chasing him. Thankfully we have managed to get him here to sign for Sligo Rovers.

“He will add more depth to the squad and we will have good competition at centre back with him and Jeff Henderson and Gavin Peers. There are plenty of good defenders in the squad with Alan Keane, Gary Boylan, Danny Ledwith and Regan Donelon as well so we have depth in that area. It’s good to have the experience of Gavin and Alan along with some younger players.”

On having almost a full squad signed already Heary said: “It was always the plan when I got here to have the squad signed up as soon as possible. We have been working hard and it is great to have got things done. I am happy with the squad we have so far and we can sit back and enjoy the Christmas period now.”
