Heary pleased with squad progress

Owen Heary yesterday added two more players to his growing squad for 2015 with new signing Ryan Coulter and Danny Ledwith staying to bring the squad to 15.

Speaking about goalkeeper Coulter Heary said he was glad to sign a player he has been looking at for a while: “I had been in touch with him before when he was playing in the states and I tried to sign him for Bohs during the year. I saw an improvement in him since signing for Athlone and he is a very decent keeper. I spoke to some of the senior goalkeepers in the league and to some of the coaches he has worked with and they all rate him highly. He has good quality and we know what he can do. He’s another good lad who looks after himself and is ambitious. That’s the type of player I want at the club.”

He is also pleased to retain the services of Danny Ledwith for another year who he rates among the best in the league in his position: “Danny is a very good player and a good defender first and foremost. He can get up and down the left side very well and scored a super goal against Cork during the season. There isn’t many good left-backs in the league and he is up there with the best of them. He’s a real asset to the club and it’s a big plus that we have signed him. There were other clubs chasing him but he wants to be here which is great for Sligo Rovers.”

Heary also said he is very happy with the progress being made so far in assembling his squad for next year: “I am definitely pleased with how the squad is coming together. We have got some very good young talent coming in to go with the experience we already have. It gives us a good blend to the squad at the moment.

“I think we have the basis of a really good squad so far and hopefully we can add a couple more soon. There is still more of last year’s squad we would like to keep and that is being worked on at the moment. Hopefully we can get some more players tied down in the coming weeks.”
