Emphatic win for Rovers under-19s

Sligo Rovers under-19s got their second win on the bounce this afternoon in Finn Park with a resounding 5-1 win over Finn Harps.

Rovers followed up last week’s 3-1 defeat of Longford Town with an impressive performance and created a host of chances in the game. There was just one change to the team with full-back Kyle Harrigan coming in for Paul Doyle.

It didn’t take long for the first goal to come. On 13 minutes centre-back Oisin Connolly put Rovers into the lead. Just two minutes later the lead was 2-0 through Gary Anderson. He got into the box before hitting a fine strike into the net.

Rovers remained on top for the rest of the half but those would be the only goals of the opening 45 minutes.

With just two minutes on the clock in the second half the third goal arrived for Rovers. The ball found its way to Cathal Carney for him to tap from close range for his first goal for the club.

Finn Harps gave themselves hope on 53 minutes when Mark Coyle got one goal back to make it 3-1.

However the three goal lead was restored just two minutes afterwards. Centre forward Carney was again on the mark with his second of the game. He was denied a hat-trick five minutes later when his attempt hit the post.

On 73 minutes the score became 5-1 when Anderson also got his second of the afternoon. The diminutive winger finishing off after the Harps keeper had saved substitute Darren Kilcawley’s shot.

That was the final goal of the game with the win moving Rovers up to sixth place in the Elite Northern Division.

There will be a two week break before the next game. It will be at home to Letterkenny Rovers.

Team: Chambers, Harrigan, O'Donoghue, Connolly (Doherty 45), Taheny, Hannon (McCallion 70), Kennoy, Walsh (Kilcawley 64), Flatley, Anderson, Carney (McCarrick 78).
