Rovers beat Northern Irish side

Sligo Rovers recorded a 3-0 win over the Northern Ireland UEFA Regions Cup team at the Showgrounds on Thursday night.

Goals in the first half from Gary Armstrong, Eamon Zayed and Raf Cretaro won the game for a team composed of mainly first team players along with some of the under-19s squad which have been breaking into the first team recently.

It didn't take long for the Bit o'Red to take the lead with Gary Armstrong scoring after just 7 minutes. The forward, who made his debut on Monday against Bohemians, got on the end of a deflected Danny North free-kick in a crowded penalty area to put the ball home.

The second goal came just after the half hour when Eamon Zayed found himself in space in the opposition penalty area and shot home with a volley. The striker who is on loan from Shamrock Rovers continuing his impressive start at the club which has seen him score three goals in his six competitive appearances to date.

There was a third goal just before half-time when Armstrong went on a strong run down the wing and then squared the ball for Raf Cretaro to apply the easy finish.

Several changes were made to the team at half-time with Flatley, Davoren, McManus, Connolly, Keating and Ledwith all coming into the game while later in the half Adam Chambers replaced Richard Brush in goals.

It would be a quieter game in the second half with no further goals for Rovers. That left the full-time result at 3-0 and a good run out for the Sligo Rovers squad who have no game this weekend due to FAI Cup games. Next up will be a game with Drogheda United in the Showgrounds on Saturady September 20th at 7:45.

Starting line-up: Brush, Boylan, Donelon, Taheny, Spillane, Cawley, O'Conor, Armstrong, Cretaro, North, Zayed.
