Rovers knocked out of EA Sports Cup

Sligo Rovers crashed out of the EA Sports Cup on Monday afternoon after they were beaten 2-0 by Derry City at the Showgrounds.

Following a scoreless first 90 minutes which also saw substitute Danny Ledwith dismissed mid-way through the second half, Derry eventually broke the deadlock twelve minutes into extra time courtesy of a Seamus Sharkey strike, while Mark Timlin sealed the win for the Candystripes with seven minutes remaining.

Peter Hutton's side had the best of the early opportunities. Patrick McEleney and former Rovers striker Anthony Elding going close inside the opening six minutes.

David Cawley almost profited from some good work from Dinny Corcoran and Steven Beattie, but the Mayo man was unlucky to shoot wide having been teed up by Beattie just before the half-hour mark.

In an even fought first half in the Sligo sun, both sides played out a cagey second half. John Russell almost grabbed the opening score on 72 but Ger Doherty's post was on hand to deflect away the midfielder's rasping effort from outside the City area.

The Bit O'Red were then reduced to ten men on 77. Having been on the pitch for just two minutes, an over-zealous challenge from Ledwith resulted in referee Ray Matthews issuing the young Dubliner his marching orders.

Rovers did well to hold on until full-time but were struck a killer blow on in the twelfth minute of extra-time when Sharkey headed home from close range.

City ensured their passage through to the next round with just seven minutes to go when he neatly placed the ball past Richard Brush and into the bottom corner of the net.

Rovers: Brush, Boylan, Peers, Folan, Dykes, Beattie, Cawley, Russell, Devaney, Cretaro, Corcoran.
Subs used: Ledwith, McManus, Nielsen.

Derry City: Doherty, Sharkey, McBride, S McEleney, Barry, McNamee, Clucas, Lowry, P McEleney, Elding, Morrison.
