Update from Rally Around Rovers group

The Rally Around Rovers Group have issued the following update on reaction to their appeal which began 10 days ago:

Thank you for the magnificent response, off and on the field, to the campaign to improve the fortunes of Sligo Rovers.

Under the management of Micky Adams and Alan Rogers, the team has won three successive games for the first time this season.  Supporters have reacted by pledging over €45,000 to the Rally Around the Rovers appeal. The last 10 days have raised the spirits of everyone close to Sligo Rovers.

The first team playing squad has now committed to joining the fundraising campaign. Their gesture captures the special bond between the players and fans of our community-owned club.

Raffaele Cretaro said: “We wanted to give something back because the club has always offered great support to us as players. There are players here that have been here a long time and also just a short period as well, but we all know what the club is about. It is a testament to what it means to every supporter to raise such an amount in a short space of time. We know it is a difficult period for the club and the players wanted to do something to help.

“There has been a lift in mood around the club in general. The manager has come in and he has worked at the highest level and there is a great feeling that we can end this season in a positive way.”

A crucial phase of the season now beckons.  League matches against Shamrock Rovers in The Showgrounds and then away to the champions Dundalk.

A Cup quarter-final, again away to Dundalk and the final league games that will decide our Premier Division status for next season.  It’s going to be a hectic time for the club. Our committee is determined to play a positive, supporting role.

The figure pledged to the Rally Around the Rovers campaign to date is €45,000.

Our plan is to continue seeking contributions to the project. It is a unique initiative – no other League of Ireland club could match the level of fans’ response.

Our aim is to have Sligo Rovers equipped to face into next season with confidence. For much of this year the run of poor results affected attendances at The Showgrounds. Income is down. For the first time in several years, the club will not be due money from participation in European competitions. We are determined to fix the finances during what remains of the season.

So far the bulk of the support for the Rally Around the Rovers campaign has come from Sligo and the North West area.  But fans elsewhere in Ireland, the UK, mainland Europe, China, Australia and the US are also backing it.  We are going to increase our efforts to attract help from loyal supporters, at home and abroad.

A souvenir badge, celebrating the campaign, will be given to all participants. The names of all those involved are being published and updated  later today on the website.  We are committed to holding a meeting, open to all who support the campaign, before the year ends and help plan a positive future for Bit o' Red.
