Owen Heary talk to Ocean FM

Owen Heary was on Ocean FM this week talking to Francie Boylan and Darragh Cox.

He discussed pre-season preparations, how he is settling into life in Sligo and today’s first friendly with Shelbourne.

On the trainging done by the squad so far: “The first day back for pre-season training there was some snow on the astro pitch but we managed to clear it to make a running track. Training is going very well, the lads came back on good condition and have been working hard the last couple of week and have been very impressive. The team are all bonding well and working hard which puts us in good stead come the start of the season.

“Cork on March 7th is our first game of the season. It will be a difficult game but one that we are all looking forward to.”

Heary says he has been made feel extremely welcome since coming to live in Sligo: “Moving to Sligo has been very good, really enjoyable. The people are very friendly and very nice and they got out of their way to do things for you so we really appreciate that. I am being made feel welcome.”

The game against Shelbourne will be the first chance for his new squad to show what they can do and Heary is looking forward to the game: “It’s more for the players to get their timing right for headers and tackles. We’ve worked hard for the two weeks so it’s part of pre-season. Shelbourne are one of my old clubs so I will look forward to my first game against them. All the players will play at some stage unless they have a little niggle.

“We would appreciate if the fans come out and get behind the lads and get to see the new players and make them feel at home. Shelbourne have some decent players, some experienced players and some younger ones so it will be a good test for us especially for the first game.

“I am looking forward to it also as Sligo Rovers have some of the best fans in the league. I used to always enjoying coming up to play here. It’s a great ground to play on but we want to make it a more difficult ground for team to come and play at, a more intimidating place for opponents coming. That’s the plan and I’m sure the fans will help with that.”

Kick-off in the Showgrounds is at 6:30.
