Pre-season schedule announced

Sligo Rovers can confirm five friendlies to be played as part of our preparations for the 2015 season.

The squad returned for pre-season training at the Showgrounds yesterday.

The schedule will begin at home taking on Owen Heary's former team Shelbourne on Saturday January 31st at 6:30pm.

Following that the Bit O'Red will go on the road for three games starting with a trip to play another First Division side Waterford United on Friday February 13th with a 5:30pm kick-off.

Two days later Rovers will play local side Ballisodare United on February 15th at 2pm. That will be followed by a trip to Mayo for a game with Castlebar Celtic on Tuesday February 17th. Kick-off time for that is to be confirmed.

The final confirmed game is back at the Showgrounds on Saturday February 28th at 7:30pm against recently relegated Athlone Town.

We are currently looking into arranging one more friendly with any details to be announced in due course.

Owen Heary spoke on the pre-season friendlies the team will play: “The first few friendlies are just about getting match practice again. The timing of heading, of going into tackles and with a few different things you be a bit off. There’s a bit of rustiness you’ll need to get off in the first few games so I’m not too worried about the results in pre-season.

"Come the end of the pre-season we’ll be more working on shape, where players should be with and without the ball and that will come in for the first game. We will be hoping that the instructions we have given them come out on the pitch and we get results.”

Competitive action will return to the Showgrounds on Saturday March 7th when the 2015 SSE Airtricity League season kicks off.

There will be two further home games in March with Derry City and Shamrock Rovers also coming to the Showgrounds. The full season fixture list is here.
