Rovers U19s defeat out of tune Harps

Sligo Rovers U19s enjoyed a comfortable 4-1 win over Finn Harps U19s in the U19 Northern Elite Division at the Sean Fallon Centre at the Showgrounds on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Mark Hannon, Martin Walsh, Liam Flately and Cathal Carney saw the Bit O'Red earn their fourth win in the division.

Rovers grabbed the lead as early as the eighth minute when a wonderful Hannon free kick from distance touched the underside of the crossbar before crossing the line.

Flately almost doubled the lead mid-way through the half but his shot sailed narrowly over the Harps crossbar.

The home side grabbed their second on 26 as Rovers continued to dominate. A neat one-two between Walsh and Flately resulted in the former tapping home at the back post following some good incisive movement from a quick counter.

Harps cut Rovers' lead in half two minutes later after some confusion in defence.

Rovers restored their two goal lead before the break in some style. A superb volley from distance from the left foot of Flately flew past the helpless Harps goalkeeper with a minute of the opening half remaining.

The lively Flately went close to extending Rovers' lead on two occasions early in the second half, while Harps did well to keep out Carney's well-hit effort on 70.

Substitute Jason Hunt found Paul Doyle in the area with a low cross fifteen minutes before the final whistle, but the Harps net-minder once again did well to keep out Doyle's drive towards goal.

Ross Taheny headed wide of the post from a corner on 76. Two minutes later, the Bit O'red had their fourth. Doyle did well to pick out Carney who cut back onto his right foot before bending the ball beyond the Harps goalkeeper and into the top corner.

Rovers should have had a fifth in injury time but Flately blazed over with an open goal gaping.

Rovers U19s: Burke, Connolly, Borotto, Taheny(c), Doherty, Walsh, Kilcawley, Hannon, Anderson, Flatley, Carney.
Subs used: Hunt, Doyle.
