Bit O'Red draw with Galway
Sligo Rovers 1
Galway United 1
Dinny Corcoran cancelled out Ryan Connolly's opener as Sligo Rovers and Galway United played out a 1-1 draw at the Showgrounds on Saturday evening.
Connolly handed Galway the lead with ten minutes played as he latched on to the end of a cross from Jake Keegan to neatly place the ball beyond Richard Brush.
Undeterred by this, Rovers replied just seven minutes later as Sander Puri forced a good save from United goalkeeper Conor Winn only for the net minder's attempted clearance to fall to Corcoran who did well to squeeze the ball between Winn and his near post. This was Corcoran's seventh league goal of the season and eight in all competitions.
Brush had to be alert on the half hour mark to push away Ryan Curran's low effort, while Stephen Walsh cracked the post from the resulting corner.
Rovers began the second period with purpose and the well placed Corcoran almost had his brace on 53 but David O'Leary was on hand to sweep the Dubliner's goalward strike off the United goal line.
Eoin Wearen's vicious shot from the edge of the area on 60 worried Winn but the skilful midfielder could only watch on as his effort whistled over the crossbar.
Brush denied Galway sub Padraic Cunningham on 73 as the Rovers net minder fell at the feet of the young striker to claim the ball. The Birmingham native repeated the trick six minutes later when he went full stretch to keep out Cunningham's shot from a Connolly cross.
Rovers' sub Gary Armstrong's delightful touch from a long ball from Keith Ward set up Corcoran five minutes from time, but the imposing centre forward was unlucky to see his attempted lob land on the roof of Winn's net. The Galway 'keeper was comfortable with Ward's placed effort two minutes into injury time at the end of the game.
Rovers' next outing is our SSE Airtricity League Premier Division clash with Longford Town this Saturday, July 11 at the Showgrounds. Kick-off is 7.45pm.
