Sligo Rovers kick-off the 2015 SSE Airtricity League season today with a game against Cork City in the Showgrounds at 7:45pm.

Rovers will start the season against the team who were runners-up last season.

The Bit o’Red have a new manager in Owen Heary and nine new players signed.

Rovers will be looking to keep up a good recent record on league opening days with five wins and three draws in the last nine years

Team news

Rovers: Eoin Wearen who has been signed from Bohemians, will miss the game due to suspension for an accumulation of yellow cards from last season.

The only other absentee will be Jeff Henderson who has a foot injury.

Cork: John O’Flynn is ruled out for the next couple of weeks through illness. Winger Billy Dennehy also misses out, as he serves a one match suspension for yellow cards accumulated in 2014.

Owen Heary: “It will be a tough game. They came second last year and have largely the same squad but have also added a few good quality players. They will be tough to play against. They are physically a strong team and are good at set-pieces but can also play when they have to. But we will be well tuned into what we have to do to beat them and will be going out to give it a go.

“It is a home game for us and there will be a big crowd there getting behind us so it is important that we just go out and play well. But I wouldn’t make any judgements on either team just from tomorrow’s game. Everyone is going into their first game on the same level and whether we win or lose it doesn’t mean that either team isn’t going to win the league, it’s only the first game.

Alan Keane: “They’re coming to our home patch and we plan to make it as tough as possible for them. What better way to start the league than a game against the league favourites on your home ground? It’s our chance to show them what we can do and how good we are. We can’t wait now. Hopefully it’s a good game and hopefully we get a good crowd there as well.

"There’s a really good buzz around the place at the minute. The new lads are young and ambitious. There are only a couple of the old fellas like myself left now. It’s a new era but the buzz is still there from previous years. Owen’s done a really good job with the players he’s brought in. They’re really hard workers.”
