Under-17s beaten by Shamrock Rovers

Sligo Rovers under-17s good home run ended this weekend as Shamrock Rovers won at The Showgrounds.

A fast start by the Hoops put them 2-0 up inside the first 10 minutes with two close range finishes.

Rovers came back into the game after that with Mark Byrne having the first shot hitting a ball over the top early but it was too high.

James McGrath then went close after impressively beating two players with a nice turn, his low shot was just wide however.

The Bit o’Red were dealt a further blow when captain Ruadhan Feeney had to go off with an injury following a nasty collision in midfield.

A well struck free-kick by the left foot of Jack Hever went close to finding the top corner but was just off target.

After that the away side got their third to take a commanding lead. But Liam Kerrigan gave hope going into the break.

A fast paced break ended with Kerrigan breaking into the box and finishing low across the face of goal.

Rovers almost got within one when Thierry Baba got highest to a set-piece played into the box by Hever but his header went over.

Shamrock Rovers played out time for much of the half and got one final goal to seal the win in the dying minutes.

Next week is the bye-week for Rovers before the penultimate game of the season away to Longford Town in a fortnight.

Sligo Rovers: McNicholas, Smith, Baba, Mahon, McDermott, Feeney, Kerrigan, Muldoon, McGrath, Hever, Byrne.

Subs used: Higgins, Gaughan, McGarry, Somers, Mullarkey.
