FAI Cup history vs Dundalk

Dundalk provide Sligo Rovers’ opposition in this year’s Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup quarter-final. The game is this Friday in Oriel Park at 7:25pm.

This is the 11th time that two of the league’s oldest and most successful clubs have been paired together in the competition.

Dundalk have had the better of the meetings down the years coming out on top in eight of the previous ten occasions. Three times it has taken a draw to separate the clubs.

The one time the Bit o’Red took on the Lilywhite in the last eight was in 1951 when Rovers advanced to the semis with a 2-0 win at The Showgrounds.

On five FAI Cup trips to Oriel Park, Rovers have been beaten on every occasion.

The aggregate score is 16-2 in favour of the current league champions. The only Rovers goals were scored by Johnny Lynch and Mick Savage in a 1988 3-2 loss.

Most recently was at the first stage of the cup last year which was won comfortably by Dundalk, more on that game here.

Once the teams played in the final which was 1981. A fifth final defeat was suffered by the Bit o’Red with a 2-0 score. Watch highlights of the game below.
