Impressive win for u-17s

Sligo Rovers under-17s team recorded a highly impressive 3-1 win over St. Patrick’s Athletic at The Showgrounds today.

The win over the current league leaders makes it three on the spin at home following 3-1 and 2-1 wins over Longford Town and Salthill Devon respectively.

After a quiet opening 20 minutes to the game a lovely team move gave Rovers the lead. Good work by Liam Kerrigan won the ball and he linked with Mark Byrne to set up the chance for Jordan Muldoon Harte. He took his time before finishing across the face of goal.

Shortly after centre forward Byrne almost scored himself hitting a volley from a Gary Higgins cross just wide.

Higgins cut in well from the right wing to have a shot but had it blocked at close range on 28 minutes.

John Mahon went close to keeping his good scoring form up but he headed wide from a corner. He also got a good block in at the other end to stop an equaliser from a Pats corner.

Another delivery by Higgins on the right found James McGrath in space but he shot straight at the keeper.

Thierry Baba then went forward for another corner and headed at goal from Mahon’s flick but couldn’t test the keeper.

The second half continued with Rovers on top as the ever-dangerous Muldoon Harte cut in from the left and had a go that ended just wide at the near post.

Pat’s got level with a rebounded effort despite Lorcan Callaghan saving the first effort well.

McGrath went close to the second after an impressive turn in the box but he could only shoot straight at the keeper.

Then Rovers re-took the lead with a great Byrne header on 63 minutes. Jack Hever floated the ball towards the box from midfield and from the left side of the box Byrne managed to get sufficient power on his header to beat the keeper into the far corner of the net.

And two minutes later Byrne was at it again. This time a high ball over the top from deep caught out the defence. He looped the ball over the keeper with his first touch and into the net.

It takes the former Knock/Kiltimagh United man to five goals in four games.

In the last 20 minutes Rovers comfortably seen out the game to pick up the three points.

Team: Callaghan, Feeney, Baba, Mahon, Hever (Gaughan), Morahan, Kerrigan (Mullarkey), McGrath (Burke), Higgins (Somers), Byrne, Muldoon Harte (McDermott).
