Seven scored in u-19s win

Rovers Under 19’s get their first home victory of the year with a 7-1 win against Drogheda United.

In their second home game of the year Rovers seized the three points with an attacking masterclass hitting seven goals past the visitors.

Rovers took an early lead in just the seventh minute when winger Brian Morley’s attempted cross went straight in over the keeper.

In the 11th minute Rovers took a two goal lead as Martin Walsh’s shot from the edge of the box bounced in over the Drogheda keeper.

Rovers continued pressing forward and almost got a third when Fintan Borotto’s header cannoned back of the crossbar.

Despite this early pressure Rovers were caught napping and Drogheda got one back with a well-taken volley just on the inside of the Rovers box.

Just as the half time whistle was about to blow Rovers regained their two goal lead when Mark Hannon’s corner found captain Ross Taheny just on the edge of the six yard box who easily headed home.

Six minutes into the second half Rovers found another goal following Walsh’s great skill down the wing and a perfect ball across which landed right on the boot of Mikey Place who cannoned home to make it 4-1.

Rovers attacking prowess again showed in the 53rd minute when full-back Ryan O’Donoghue beat two Drogheda men before smashing it into the top-corner from 15 yards out.

Then just 4 minutes later Rovers got another when Iarla Connor’s initial header from Mark Hannon’s corner was saved by the Drogheda keeper but it landed right on Fintan Borrotto’s head who easily slotted it into the open net.

Rovers last goal came in the 83rd minute when Place grabbed his second goal of the game through a free-kick right in the corner of the pitch which somehow sailed past every Drogheda defender and went straight into the top corner.

Rovers: Burke (McNicholas 78), O'Donoghue, Taheny (Doherty 78), McCallion, Borotto, Walsh, Doyle (Connor 60), Hannon (Kennoy 65), Place, Morley, Carney (Birrane 60).
