Wexford 0 Rovers 5: Report
Sligo Rovers earned the biggest win of Dave Robertson’s tenure to date by winning 5-0 away to Wexford Youths.
Four of the goals came in the second half including on one debut for new striker Achille Campion and a first for recent acquisition Daniel Kearns.
The win sends the Bit o’Red back into the top half of the SSE Airtricity League table.
The suspended Gavin Peers and Jimmy Keohane made way from the team for Michael Leahy and a debut for another signing this week Pat McCann at right-back.
There was just two minutes gone in the game when Raff Cretaro gave Rovers a magnificent start with a second minute goal. Cretaro ran onto a ball into the right of the box and made it look easy as he slotted it home.
It’s the sixth goal for him this season, his most prolific since the 2012 campaign, matching his goal to put Rovers in front against Wexford back in May.
A Liam martin cross a few minutes later almost gave the chance for a second, it dropped to Daniel Kearns on the far side but there was sufficient bodies back defending to block his effort.
Wexford looked to get back in the game but twice Micheal Schlingermann made good saves to stop shots by the Youths top scorer Danny Furlong.
Michael Leahy did get his head to a 24th minute delivery by Kearns but without a strong connection the ball flew off target over the crossbar.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half Daniel Kearns made his first Rovers goal. In his fourth game with the club he won possession from the defence setting up an opening, although his initial effort was kept out he took control of the rebound and tapped into the waiting goal.
On 63 minutes Frenchman Campion was introduced to the game for Kearns with his registration having come through just hours before the game.
In four minutes he made his impact. After winning the ball himself he played it to the right for Cretaro, he cross deep to Sadlier and from the back post he played the ball across goal again where campion has run to prod home his first score in a Rovers jersey.
A free-kick on 70 minutes led to a wonderful piece of skill from Kieran Sadlier as he accurately lifted the ball over the wall sailing into the net past a stranded keeper for 4-0.
His second goal and Cretaro’s second assist finished the scoring on 82 minutes. Again from the right Cretaro cross and Sadlier controlled the ball taking it away from a defender before a confident finish.
Mikey Place was brought on for his second appearance for the club in the closing 10 minutes of the game for Raff Cretaro.
Rovers now go sixth ahead of St. Pat’s to start a busy period with a visit to Cork City on Monday followed by the visit of Shamrock Rovers to The Showgrounds Friday.
