7-0 win over Charlestown

 
Sligo Rovers got their 2016 pre-season campaign off to a winning start as the Bit O'Red put seven past Charlestown Athletic on Saturday afternoon. 
 
A brace a piece from Mikey Place and Liam Martin saw Dave Robertson's charges lead 4-0 at the break. Jason Hunt, Cathal Carney and Shane McCallion netted in the second half to complete the rout.
 
Place opened the scoring with 13 minutes played following hard work from Martin down the Rovers left. Martin doing well to hold possession before squaring for Place who tapped home into an empty net. 
 
Both strikers had chances before the Martin grabbed his first of the day on 38 as Rovers finished the half strongly. Gary Armstrong's deep cross finding the former Ballinamallard man before Martin tidily placed the ball beyond the Charlestown goalkeeper. 
 
Two became three with two minutes of the half remaining when Place netted from close range, while Martin made it four on the stroke of half-time with a half-volley from close range. 
 
 
The fifth goal of the day came 17 minutes into the second half. Substitute Cathal Carney was unlucky to see his shot pushed away. However, fellow replacement Jason Hunt was on hand to guide the ball home from the edge of the area. 
 
Carney got his just rewards on 70 and Rovers' sixth when he latched on to a ball from the left to finished away from the reach of the Charlestown net minder. 
 
The rout was complete on 76 as Shane McCallion was first to react to Keelan Kennoy's floated cross, sending a powerful header past the keeper. 
 
Rovers wore a temporary jersey for this game with the new 2016 jersey ready for the next friendly against Liverpool under-21s at the Showgrounds on February 10.
