Preview: Charlestown friendly

Sligo Rovers 2016 squad get their first piece of on-field action tomorrow as pre-season begins with a trip to Charlestown Athletic.

With several signings made this week the new Bit o’Red is taking further shape.

Dave Robertson sees the game as the chance to get gametime for his players and also to help with the process of building the team: “We will be looking to develop our style of play and also get understanding of eachother. There will be a few trailists involved so they will get some minutes so we can see what they can do. It will be a good introduction for some of the new players to our way of playing.

“The main thing is to get time out on the pitch together and develop as a team. Professionalism will be key and our discipline will also be key. We will have to stick to what we want to do and on the football outcomes we want to achieve.”

Jeff Henderson has been training with Rovers for the last two weeks as he continues his way back to full fitness. Robertson is pleased with what he has seen so far and he will be staying to train at The Showgrounds. Robertson said: “Jeff has settled in very well. He has done a number of assessments with our physio especially on his foot and metatarsal and the reports have been good. We will have to ease him in and make sure he is ok. Hopefully he can get himself back to fitness through pre-season and if he is he will be in a good position to be signed for the season.”

The game with Charlestown marks the occasion of their silver anniversary. The kick-off in Bellaghy Park is at 2pm with admission €5 for adults and free in for kids under 16.
