Sligo Rovers vs Shamrock Rovers

SSE Airtricty League

Game 01

Saturday March 05 7:45pm

The Showgrounds

Lowdown:

The start of a new season and a new era is here against a very old rival.

Rovers have a new manager in Dave Robertson and a new-look squad featuring 12 new signings to the squad.

The opposition on opening night in Shamrock Rovers with Pat Fenlon’s team looking to improve upon last year’s 3rd place finish.

A red-hot atmosphere is expected tonight for a game not to be missed!

Opposition

Pat Fenlon returns for his third season in charge at Tallaght with this team looking to get back into the top two for the first time since last winning the league in 2011.

Three new players have been added with Killian Brennan back for a second time and forwards Gary Shaw and Dean Clarke added from Longford Town and Limerick respectively. Damien Duff, Conor Kenna and Ryan Brennan have left from last year’s squad.

Pre-season took them to India for a tournament which saw two wins and two defeats. Domestically they have beaten both U.C.D. and Shelbourne.

Last game:

A fantastic game at The Showgrounds saw Rovers take a point from the game with Shamrock Rovers thanks to Sander Puri’s first half goal.

Gary Boylan created the opening goal with a cross from the right. His cross from deep was met by the head of Puri who, from 12 yards, managed to twist his body before accurately heading the ball into the bottom far corner away from the reach of the helpless Barry Murphy for his third goal of the season.

Gary McCabe equalised on 58 minutes as his wonderfully struck free kick from 25 yards bent around the Sligo wall, wrong-footing Richard Brush in the process, before squeezing inside the post.

Rovers: Richard Brush, Gary Boylan, Alan Keane, Gavin Peers, Regan Donelon, Raffaele Cretaro (Anthony Elding), John Russell (Keith Ward), David Cawley, Jason Hughes, Sander Puri, Dinny Corcoran (Morten Nielsen).

Team news:

Rovers: No in injuries to deal with for Dave Robertson in his first game. John Russell is returning to full fitness following surgery and a late decision is to be made on his involvement.

Shamrock Rovers: A clean bill of health for the Hoops also and no suspensions either.
