Report: u-19s fall in opener
Clinical finishing gave Derry City 3-0 win in the season opener of the under-19 Northern Division.
Despite early pressure from Rovers, Derry took the lead in the 10th minute from a wonderful Cathal McFadden free-kick just on the edge of the box which found the back of the net after hitting the post.
A defensive blunder led to Derry being awarded a penalty which was coolly dispatched in to the bottom left corner by Farren giving Derry a two goal lead in the 26th minute.
The visitors got their third goal through a well-crafted counter attack goal in the dying embers of the game, while Rovers where throwing bodies forward to try and get back into the game they were left exposed at the back and Stephen Duffy ran through in the 86th minute to finish the game off.
The home side started well and showed attacking intent as they were putting a lot of pressure on the Derry back four with Mark Hannon and Brian Morley both going close to giving the home side the lead early on.
Then almost out of nowhere Derry took the lead thorough a beautiful set-piece from striker Cathal McFadden which curved around the wall and left goalkeeper Jack Burke rooted to the spot as it hit off the post and went in.
Rovers’ tough task was then made even more difficult when McFadden was brought down inside the box by Doyle resulting in a penalty being awarded which Farren coolly slotted home.
Sligo native Mark Hannon put a half-volley just wide before the turn of the half as Rovers continued searching for a way to break through the Derry defence.
Then after a strong defensive display from the away side, Stephen Duffy found himself through on goal and keeper Jack Burke, despite his best efforts, couldn’t keep it out, Giving Derry a three goal lead with just minutes left in the tie effectively finishing the tie.
