U-19s draw with Dundalk

A 92nd minute equalizer gave Rovers a hard-fought point against Dundalk in the Showgrounds.

The Rovers side remained largely unchanged from the side that lost to Bohemians in their last game, with the only change being Jason Hunt coming in for Cathal Carney.

Dundalk started off the game the better of the two sides and went close very early on, but even with all their possession they were unable to break down the Rovers defence.

It took the visitors until the 33rd minute, when following some great skill down the wing and a superb low cross, the ball was tapped in from the edge of the six yard box to give the visitors the lead.

Even with their one nil lead Dundalk continued to pile on the pressure and they could easily have made it two nil, if it wasn’t for Captain Ross Taheny, who headed the ball off of the goal line and onto the crossbar before it was eventually scrambled away, this meant Dundalk would take just a one goal lead going into the second half.

Dundalk’s spell of dominance would continue through the majority of the second half with Rovers looking unable to find their rhythm; it wasn’t until the last ten minutes that Rovers started asking questions of the Dundalk defence.

The last ten minutes was full of back and forth football throughout and just as it looked like The Lilywhites might be going home with the three points, substitute Iarla Connor used some great skill and pace to get by two men in the corner before smashing a low cross into the area which somehow missed every player in the box and went straight into the bottom corner, tying the game at one a piece in the 92nd minute, Rovers held on for the draw.

Despite not playing to the best of their ability Rovers should be proud of the character they showed to come back and earn a point against a very strong Dundalk side.

Rovers: Burke, Kennoy (Hannon 65), Taheny (c), McCallion (Doherty 22), Borotto, Walsh, Frempong, Doyle, Morley, Place, Hunt (Connor 85).
