77 tribute night Friday
It’s 70s night at The Showgrounds this Friday night!
Rovers will be taking on St. Patrick’s Athletic in the SSE Airtricity League at 7:45pm.
As it is 40 years since Rovers famous league title win we will be paying homage to the squad.
The title win itself broke a 40-year drought with the trophy coming to Sligo.
We will have manager of the team Billy Sinclair and several of the players from the team present at the game with a presentation to be made at half-time.
Chairman of the Sligo Rovers Heritage Group Aidan Mannion said: “Rovers supporters are very proud of the club’s history, many of whom were there to see Billy Sinclair and his team earn our first League title in 40 years. It is important that we celebrate these achievements and show the people who contributed so much to the club that their efforts will always be fondly remembered. I expect they will get a great welcome on the night.”
The drama and excitement of that special era in Rovers history is captured in great detail in Rovers official history ‘The Bit O’ Red’; A reception will be hosted for Billy and the players before the game and they will be presented with a copy of the history.
There'll be an opportunity to meet the players at the post-match reception in Foley's Bar, Castle Street.
All the best of 70s music and fashion will be brought back for this one night only!
The game itself will see two teams look to get their first points of the brand new season, there has been defeats for both in the two opening weekends.
2016 brought three tight contest with draws on both occasions Rovers went to Richmond Park.
At The Showgrounds Rovers got the win 1-0 thanks to Raff Cretaro.
