Rovers battle but are beaten in Dundalk

The scoreline didn’t truly reflect the story of the game as Sligo Rovers were beaten by four goals to nil by Dundalk at Oriel Park.

A John Mountney hat-trick, supplemented by a Patrick Hoban spot-kick put an end to Rovers’ seven-game unbeaten run as the Lilywhites opened up a three point lead over the Hoops at the summit.

In search of their fifth league victory on the spin, Dundalk certainly helped matters when they hit the lead within the opening minute.

A quick throw-in from Dean Jarvis allowed Michael Duffy the time and space to whip a ball onto the head of Mountney, who finished with aplomb.

Buoyed by their early goal, the home side came at Rovers in waves, targeting their right side in particular.

Jordan Flores skimmed the side netting with an effort ten minutes in. While the same man saw his glancing header fly past Ed McGinty’s post from another Duffy cross.

Rovers had their first sight at goal on 25 minutes.

Daryl Fordyce and David Cawley combining in front of the Dundalk area as the latter slipped the ball through to Romeo Parkes.

The Jamaican’s effort from the angle cutting across the face of the goal and just beyond Gary Rogers’ back post.

Duffy was at it again just past the half hour when he ventured inside from his wide position.

McGinty needing to fist the winger’s shot away after Vinny Perth’s side burrowed their way through the Sligo defence.

Rovers then startled the champions somewhat, starting the second half on the front foot.

Rogers was almost caught out by a clever set piece from Cawley, but all of Sligo’s good work was undone on the hour.

Kyle Callan-McFadden somewhat unfortunate to concede the penalty when he dived in front of a Hoban shot.

Hoban missed a penalty on the opening night against the same goalkeeper, but he made no mistake this time as he sent McGinty the wrong way for goal number 11 of the year.

The league leaders made it three on 68 when Duffy delivered another super ball onto the head of Mountney, who placed the ball beyond McGinty for his brace.

Mountney had his hat-trick on 80.

Referee Rob Rogers adjudged McFadden to have upended a Hoban in the area. Mountney firing past McGinty from 12 yards.

Preview: Rovers to take on Dundalk

Sligo Rovers visit Dundalk on Friday night in the SSE Airtricity Premier Division in Oriel Park.

The Bit O’ Red won 2-1 against Bohemians last week and are unbeaten against Dundalk with a 1-1 draw and 2-1 win so far.

In team news, Dante Leverock (concussion) is out and travel to meet up with Bermuda ahead of the Gold Cup in the coming days.

Regan Donelon and Johnny Dunleavy are doubtful with muscle strains. Niall Morahan returns.

Liam Buckley said: “Dundalk is a very hard game for every side in the league, especially away from home. Fight and desire has been the backbone of what we’ve done so far and in fairness to the lads they’ve worked extremely hard.

“Whether we are under the radar is something I don’t consider but what is happening is we are fundamentally getting better and improving. We are halfway through the season but it remains a work in progress because we are trying to gel it together. By no means do we get carried away because you’re 90 minutes away from a defeat. We have to maintain all the attributes I’ve spoken about.

“We got a draw earlier in the season. Dundalk have a good squad of players, their ambition would be to the win. From our end we go there looking give a good account of ourselves and to get a result.”

Parkes wins it late on in Dalymount

Romeo Parkes’ 89th minute winner saw Sligo Rovers stretch their unbeaten run to seven as they stunned ten man Bohemians at Dalymount Park.

Parkes had given Rovers the lead early in the second half but Bohs bounced back shortly after, courtesy of Conor Levingston.

Keith Long’s side were well in charge for the majority of the second period, despite losing Derek Pender to a red card.

But Rovers pulled through with a late smash and grab strike through the in form Parkes with one minute left.

Neither side managed to worry the opposition goalkeeper in a first half which saw 18 minutes injury time added on.

Corcoran pulled up short at the edge of the Sligo six-yard-box after nine minutes, resulting in five minutes treatment before the striker was stretchered off.

Corcoran unable to continue having picked up what looked like an ankle injury.

The medical staff from both camps were in attendance again on the quarter hour.

Sligo centre half Dante Leverock collided with his goalkeeper Ed McGinty after the Bermudan struggled to deal with a ball forward from the Bohs defence.

Substitute Ryan Swan then went to ground as he tried to round a dazed McGinty, but referee Neil Doyle waved play on.

The official then called a halt to play in order for Leverock to be treated.

After a 12 minute break, the game’s first shot on target came on 35 minutes.

Danny Mandroiu, who scored a delicious free-kick against St Patrick’s Athletic recently, unable to repeat the trick as McGinty was relatively comfortable in dealing with his curled effort from 30 yards.

Bohs net minder James Talbot dived on half chances for both Ronan Murray and Romeo Parkes.

While McGinty saw off long-rangers from both Mandroiu and Conor Levingston late on in the first period which lasted 64 minutes.

The second half was just three minutes old when Liam Buckley’s charges hit the lead.

Skipper David Cawley finding Parkes in space on the right. The Jamaican international taking time to steady himself before knocking the ball off the inside of Talbot’s far post for his fifth of the year.

The lead lasted barely five minutes.

The sheer power of Levingston’s drive from the edge of the area allowing the ball burrow under the grasp of McGinty and beyond the rookie ‘keeper.

Lifted by their equaliser, the Dubliners were almost ahead on the hour.

Both Levingston and Swan were just inches away from getting a touch on Darragh Leahy’s ball to the back post as Sligo had to weather the Gypsy storm.

Bohs were then reduced to ten on 69 minutes when captain Pender was dismissed following a high challenge on Lewis Banks in front of the away dugout.

Keith Long’s charges looked the more likely to win the game as they piled on the pressure, but there was to be a sting in the Rovers tail.

Parkes started the move deep in his own half by pushing possession into the path of Ronan Coughlan, who on the counter, returned the gesture with a superb ball over the top for Parkes.

The striker taking a deft touch to control the ball before twice dummying both Talbot and the last Bohs defender and firing home for his brace.

Preview: Rovers head for Dalymount

Sligo Rovers travel to Dublin on Friday night to take on Bohemians in the SSE Airtricity Premier Division, kick-off 7:45pm.

The Bit O’ Red drew 0-0 against Derry City and now sit seventh in the table going into this meeting.

Bohs won 2-0 in the first meeting of the teams in The Showgrounds.

Rovers welcome back Johnny Dunleavy from a hamstring problem. Niall Morahan is out with a calf strain.

There are no other injury complaints

Liam Buckley said: “In Waterford it was such an open game where a draw was probably fair in the end and then last week it was extremely tight and again that outcome was the right one.

“We have to keep on persevering to get results. You saw again during the week some really nip and tuck matches that could have gone either way. It’s just the way the league is.

“We have to go graft in Dalymount to try to get a result because that’s the case in every game you play.

“Bohs will be feel hard done by with the concession of such a late penalty so I have no doubt they’ll be looking to react to that.

“From our end, we’ve had a good week of training and we have a couple of decisions to make for the team selection.

“Niall Morahan is out which is unfortunate as he has made a good contribution this year. He has that ability to play in midfield or at right-back.

“I think he only turns 19 before the end of the month so the progress he has made has been excellent and he’ll be back involved soon I’m sure.

“We’ve got a couple of tough away matches coming up, starting on Friday but we’ll go there looking to give a good account of ourselves.”
