Buckley discusses ‘excitement’ at upcoming season

Sligo Rovers manager Liam Buckley says he cannot remember a time when he was more excited by his involvement in football ahead of the new SSE Airtricity League season.

This is his 25th year in management after a playing career that brought him to Canada, Belgium, Switzerland and Spain as well as the League of Ireland.

He previously managed St Patrick’s Athletic (twice), Sporting Fingal, Shamrock Rovers and Athlone Town (twice).  He says each experience with each club was different but what strikes him about Sligo Rovers is the unique relationship between the club and the community.

“I really admired what I saw during the recent club AGM.  It brought home to me the commitment made to help the club survive and develop.  The extra work during the pandemic was amazing. I was sorry afterwards that all of our playing staff weren’t across the Zoom calling during the AGM.”

This year, with rising costs and spending, Buckley has been supported with, as reported at the AGM, an increase in budget.

“I’m always conscious of what it takes to keep Sligo Rovers going – the voluntary work, fund-raising and careful use of resources.  It’s a community-owned club and I try to spend the money like it is my own.”

In the close-season, Rovers were linked with a number of players before adding to the squad. He said that in some cases offers made weren’t enough to get a deal done. In other instances, he wasn’t prepared to meet terms desired because he felt it would not be in the best interests of the club.

This week the club announced three new arrivals, Dutch-born, New Zealand defender, Nando Pijnaker, Canadian-born striker, Jordan Hamilton and New Zealand striker, Max Mata.    Buckley says “they are all in their 20’s and like our other new signings, Will Fitzgerald, Karl O’Sullivan, Paddy Kirk and Aidan Keena, they are ambitious.

“They want to develop and that’s important.”

The Rovers boss hopes this year’s squad will be an improvement on last season.  “We try to improve, year on year.  We re-signed players who did well last year. They showed buy-in to what we trying to develop at the club. We have our talent here as well. We hope that Seamas Keogh, who came back to Sligo from Southampton in the middle of the season, will kick on given he’s been able to have a pre-season and settle back.”

Six new signings with Max Mata arriving today

According to the manager, he sees the transfers of Johnny Kenny to Celtic and John Mahon to Saint Johnstone as a success story for Sligo Rovers.

“We will miss the lads. They gave their very best when they were here. Now they have a chance to be great ambassadors for the club and country.

“I’m delighted for them and their families. For me, they are proof that the club’s strategy of developing its academy is succeeding. John Mahon came through the ranks. He overcame injury and came back stronger.  Johnny Kenny also came through the academy and loved his time here.  As I understand it this is the first time that two local lads, who came up through the system, have transferred to cross-channel clubs.”

Buckley says the club is right to use the academy to help attract talent from the North West region and beyond.

“We have no big benefactor or wealthy owners but the club still has the good sense to appoint a full-time staff member, Conor O’Grady, to help develop the academy.

“Given our location and the way the club is owned by the community, this policy makes sense.”

Seamas Keogh has impressed during pre-season

The manager says that since he arrived over three years ago, he has been conscious of the need to improve the playing surface at The Showgrounds. The inclement weather in the region remains a factor while there is a long-term to lay a new surface.

“I know the ongoing efforts to make the most of what we have.  I do feel our teams will only have the confidence to express themselves fully when there is a new pitch at The Showgrounds. That would make a genuine difference to us.”

He says he is excited by the club’s Masterplan.

“If the facilities described in the plan can be delivered, I think it will set up Sligo Rovers as a force for decades to come.  I know the people involved, from the chairman down, are working hard behind the scenes.

“The news about the floodlights is a great start.  If they can deliver a new pitch, replace the all-weather surface, improve the ground and get academy facilities in the area, Sligo will become an example for the rest of the country.”

Under Buckley’s tenure, the club have continually risen in the league standings with each passing season.

For the second successive year, it is one of the four League of Ireland clubs set to compete in Europe in July.

“Every club has used the close-season to try to put improvements in place.  It’s going to be a very competitive league again this year.

“Since I came here in October 2018 with my wife, Orlaith, we’ve been made feel welcome.  We have kind neighbours in Riverstown, we know how much the club means to the area and its supporters.

“I’m not the kind of manager who goes shouting up and down the side line. I take my notes through the game and discuss these with the players at half time and throughout the week. I prefer to try and play by design not by chance. I am 100% committed to doing my best for Sligo Rovers. I enjoy being here and I want to give something back. It’s a very exciting proposition for the year ahead and we’re excited to get underway.”

Max Mata signs for Sligo Rovers

Sligo Rovers are thrilled to announce the signing of striker Max Mata from US outfit Real Monarchs for the 2022 season.

Mata, 21, has been capped by New Zealand and has previous experience in Europe with Swiss side Grasshopper and a loan spell with Estonian outfit Nomme Kalju.

The striker had a prolific run of form with Kalju, scoring nine times in 11 league starts and playing in their Europa League qualifier against Celtic.

His overall record was 12 goals in 20 appearances. During that spell he was a team-mate of former Rovers player Sander Puri.

Having shone at academy level in New Zealand as a youngster, he joined Wellington Phoenix where his form in the reserve league and appearing in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup with New Zealand led to an initial move to Grasshopper.

At 20 he joined the Monarchs in the USL Championship, the second tier of the US, in 2021 and scored twice in 11 starts.

His international debut came against Lithuania as he appeared as a substitute along with recent Rovers signing Nando Pijnaker.

He joins subject to work permit and international clearance.

Mata said: “I’m very happy to join Sligo Rovers. When the chance came up I didn’t have to think long about it. I want to play games and I want to score goals and Ireland was very appealing. I’ve played in Europe before and done well and I definitely think I can do it again.

“I enjoyed the experience in America last season, with a regret of not playing as much as I would have liked. I’m very motivated to come to Sligo, play games and score goals.

“I don’t think integration will be a problem being an English-speaking country. I’m excited to experience the League of Ireland and play here.

“It’s just a matter of being focused and I’ll be totally committed to succeeding here.

“Sligo Rovers have been doing well in Ireland, I’ve spoken with the coach about what he wants the team to be and it all added up to me wanting to be in Sligo and achieving both my own targets and those of the team.”

One familiar face for Mata will be Pijnaker as the duo link up again.

“I was with Nando in Switzerland and with New Zealand obviously so it’ll be a help for sure. It’ll also be good for settling into training and the team so that’s great. I’m looking forward to meeting all my team-mates and making my debut as soon as I can.”

Manager Liam Buckley said: “We’re delighted to get Max. He’s another really good footballer and a forward player to compliment Aidan Keena, Jordan Hamilton and Cillian Heaney who has done well this pre-season.

“He’s done well in Europe beforehand. From a career point of view he’s on the up and we can see how driven he is and how much he wants to do well in the game.

“He’s still only 21 and played in the USL Championship last season so he’s coming here with good experience already.

“He’s most certainly a number nine and can also play in a two. It’s good to have that option. Max is in a very good physical condition, and it’ll just be about getting him up to speed from a match point of view and settling into the league. Both Jordan and Max will be with us this week hopefully and be part of training before the Bohemians game.

“The squad is close to completion but we remain in the market certainly. There are players out there who are of interest. It’s important to have a squad to get us through the season and that it is balanced. It’s a long season with 40+ games in all competitons and we want to make sure we’re covered.

“Bringing in Nando, Jordan and Max really compliments the players we have at our disposal. I’m happy with where we’re at, the players are working very hard to be ready for Saturday night and we’re looking forward to getting underway and particularly in front of our own supporters on Saturday night.”

Californian supporters help local Sligo charities

Two Californian based Bit O’ Red supporters have shown their support for local Sligo charities by sponsoring a Men’s team player on their behalf for the 2022 season.

Joseph Lima and Lisa Beach have been kindly donating to the club in recent seasons and allowing a local charity to benefit from the exposure that comes with such sponsorships.

This year, they have paid for sponsorships for Will Fitzgerald, Mark Byrne and Adam McDonnell.

New signing Fitzgerald will be sponsored in name by Sligo Volunteer Centre. Sligo Volunteer Centre provides a link for people looking to volunteer locally and non-profit groups looking for volunteers.

Ciara Herrity, manager of Sligo Volunteer Centre:

”Sligo Volunteer Centre are delighted to sponsor Will Fitzgerald for this upcoming season. This was made possible by donors Lisa Beach and Joseph Lima in California, USA.

“As much as we love Sligo for the beauty of the region, the most important natural resource is the people within it. We hope to celebrate their strength and resilience during these times with this sponsorship on behalf of the Sligo Volunteer Centre, and hope you volunteer through them and support their work.” Joseph Lima & Lisa Beach.

Mark Byrne will be sponsored by Sligo Tidy Towns. Sligo Tidy Towns is organised and run by a group of volunteers who are passionate and proud of the place they live in. Their mission is to help Sligo continue to tap into its huge tourism potential – and to further develop Sligo’s tourism.

Sligo Tidy Towns is always on the lookout for extra help and new volunteers. If you think you have a couple of hours to spare each week, they’d love to hear from you. You can email sligotidytowns@gmail.com.

Adam McDonnell will be sponsored by Sligo Lend a Hand. Lend a Hand is provided free of charge by a pool of voluntary handy-persons and helpers. The service includes minor repairs and small jobs inside and outside of the house. The emphasis is that no job is too small.

To avail of the Sligo Lend a Hand Service call a dedicated phone line 087 177 6386 from 11 am – 3 pm, Monday-Friday. The coordinator will organize a team of volunteers to make a home visit. The repairs will be carried out in pairs, at a time agreed with the service user and the Sligo Lend a Hand coordinator.

The club would like to thank Joseph & Lisa for their sponsorship of the club and also their promotion of these important local organisations.

None of these organisations have spent any funding on these sponsorships and have been fully funded by Joseph & Lisa.

Canadian striker Hamilton joins Sligo Rovers

Canadian striker Jordan Hamilton has signed for Sligo Rovers for the 2022 season.

The 25-year-old has joined subject to work permit and international clearance.

Hamilton was a member of Toronto FC’s historic 2017 treble-winning team and also won three Canadian Championship trophies.

He scored 11 goals in 54 MLS regular season games. In 2020 he joined Columbus Crew where he was again part of an MLS Cup winning-squad and was last with Indy Eleven in the USL as he scored five goals in 18 matches.

In the USL his total record is 21 goals in 61 games, having scored regularly with every club he has joined.

Hamilton is also a former international having been capped twice at senior level by his country.

Rovers boss Liam Buckley: “Jordan is a technically good and talented footballer with not just strong MLS experience but also having done really well in the USL. We feel Jordan is a good signing for us and he can bring his form in the US to the league here.

“There will be a period he has to acclimatise to the league and a new season, but I think he will show to be a really good addition to the group.

“He can score goals and as a footballer he’s very accomplished as well as in the air. He joins subject to a work permit which we hope to process as soon as we can.

“We are in the market for more attacking players, bearing in mind we have lost Johnny Kenny. Aidan Keena and Jordan are great signings for us and when we finish the group in the next week or so I think it’ll show we’ll have some fantastic players at our disposal.”

Jordan Hamilton said: “I’m very pleased to join Sligo Rovers. It’s exciting to play in a new league and in Europe and I can’t wait to experience it. I want to help the team achieve its goals this season and show what I can bring.

“The team has been in the top four of the table for two years and the manager has told me about what a competitive league it is. I’m excited for the challenge and to play in front of all the Sligo Rovers fans.”

Sport capital grant for Sligo Rovers

Sligo Rovers today welcome the news of the awarding of a sport capital grant of €211,674 for redevelopment work in The Showgrounds.

The announcement was made by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht Sports and Media and the Bit O’ Red wish to thanks Minister Catherine Martin, Minister of State Jack Chambers and Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Michael McGrath, for their support.

Today’s announcement is a crucial next step in the Sligo Rovers Masterplan that allows for Phase 1 of it to begin.

This includes new floodlights in the stadium which will see The Showgrounds achieve the minimum requirements set out in both UEFA Category 2 and UEFA Category 3 stadia as well and other ground improvements.

The Masterplan vision for Sligo Rovers is a new 6,000 stadium to achieve all the needed all the requirements of a UEFA Category 3 stadium.

This week Sligo Rovers invested €100,000 of the club’s funds in a planning process and will spend a further six-figure sum later in the year to bring the project forward with the support of the club’s fans and members through the club’s renowned fundraising mechanisms.

The club also acknowledges how all four of the constituency TDs are providing cross-party support of Sligo Rovers. We also thank all of the elected members of Sligo County Council and its management team who are backing the club’s development plan.

Sligo Rovers chairman Tommy Higgins said: “It’s very heartening for a community-owned club to have practical encouragement as we strive to create the facilities the region deserves.

“In our discussions with ministers and elected representatives on a local and national level, we feel they see the vision we have but also the results we are producing. That is through investing in footballers and giving a pathway, both male and female, and being a focal point within the region providing facilities and a place of inclusivity.

“I wish to thank Ministers Catherine Martin and Jack Chambers for this allocation which will bring great improvements to The Showgrounds. Through our application we have demonstrated the ambition of so many stakeholders to take Sligo Rovers to a new level.

“We have the FAI being fully supportive, describing Sligo Rovers as the standard-bearer in community work. Sligo County Council are very much behind us and on a national level we believe there is an understanding that football, and in particular the League of Ireland, must grow in order for the game as a whole to thrive in years to come.

“There is no time to waste and we will bring forward the next phase of our plan as soon as possible. We want to develop more international footballers in our academy, male and female, and have our facilities utilise the incredible talent in a huge catchment north-west area while we generate increased revenue to invest more in trying to achieve our overall target.

“Our centenary is just six years away and we want to bring the plan forward with that in mind.

“Finally, I wish to thank the ministers again and my colleagues at Sligo Rovers for their fantastic work in reaching a new stage of this plan.”

Update: Policy on gambling advertising

Following a query at our Annual General Meeting last night, the club can issue the following update on gambling advertising.

“Sligo Rovers have taken the decision not to accept sponsorship from gambling companies.

“The Bit O’ Red have turned down two large sponsorship offers from gambling companies in the last number of months as we move to formalise this policy.

“As a community-funded club, we believe it would be irresponsible to accept these proposals.

“Sponsorship is a critical aspect in the running of Sligo Rovers and turning down five-figure sponsorship offers is not a straight-forward decision, particularly given the club is self-funded with no individual benefactor like many others in the League of Ireland.

“The ethos of our club is to be inclusive and open to welcome all ages and demographics. We feel such advertising, directly aimed at our supporters and particularly to our young fans, could have a detrimental outcome going forward and not in the spirit of the football club.”

Brennan signs on for Feeney’s Rovers

Ballybofey native Caoimhe Brennan is the latest player to join Sligo Rovers ahead of the club’s first ever season in the Women’s National League.

The 18-year-old joins the Bit O’Red having spent the last three years playing for the Donegal Women’s League in the underage national league.

Brennan says she is honoured to be part of Sligo Rovers history.

“It’s a big achievement. It’s an honour too because not a lot of people can say they’ve been part of the first ever Sligo Rovers Women’s National League team. It’s good that Steve had faith in me to let me express myself and play in the first team.”

The Donegal native played her underage club football with Finn Valley, from as early as she can remember.

She has won silverware at the Gaynor Cup in 2018 winning the plate and in the Donegal league in 2020.

Brennan has played Gaelic Games too over the years. She is currently in first year at Letterkenny IT, where she is studying Sports and Exercise.Brennan is thriving at Sligo Rovers, a move that felt right for her.

“One of the girls from Sligo said to me about coming down and it kind of sparked an interest for me. I’d always thought I’d like a different experience in a different environment so it just felt right for me.

“It’s been great. The environment there has been absolutely unreal, everybody gets on really well and there’s good team morale building.”

McGuinness signs for Rovers

Sligo Rovers can confirm that Gemma McGuinness has signed ahead of our first season in the Women’s National League.

The Donegal native returns to football having spent the last two years living in Vietnam.

McGuinness, who played her underage football with Greencastle, is a right-sided midfielder who has played underage football with Ireland.

The 26-year-old played international football at Under 15, under 17 and under 19s.

She played alongside Rovers’ Lauren Boles and Emma Hansberry during her time as an underage international.

McGuinness took a break from football before returning when she attended university.

She played for Team Ireland at the 2019 Summer Universiade when at Ulster University and played for Northern Ireland at the 2019 Turkish Cup.

Having played for Derry City for three years before departing for Vietnam, McGuinness has plenty of experience playing football at an elite level.

She was training with Derry after she returned home at Christmas, until a call came in from Boles to see if she would be interested in coming to Rovers.

“The first day I came down I was like ‘yeah definitely, this is for me’,” she said.

“The drive isn’t too bad, I don’t mind it. The quality of the training is worth the drive.”

There are a number of Donegal players in Steve Feeney’s side, so McGuinness and her team-mates will at least be able to share lifts.

McGuinness is a performance nutritionist, and works with Davey Nutrition, which is run by Sligo native Daniel Davey.

There are a lot of advantages to signing for Sligo Rovers for McGuinness.

“It’s relatively close to home, it’s a chance to play in the Women’s National League for the first time, and the training sessions have been superb.

“It’s been brilliant. Even the first day I went down, I wasn’t sure if I was signing for Derry this season or what I was doing, I’ve never played in the Women’s National League so it’s a big opportunity for me. The first day I went to training I knew it was right.

“It’s so well-organised. Steve always says the right thing at the right time, you can tell he puts a lot of thought into what he says. Getting back and seeing the girls having not seen them since u17. It’s good.

“I’ve been involved with football for years and I’ve never played WNL. It’s somewhat close to home, I don’t have to travel too far. To be involved in the first team is definitely an honour.”
